Diversity Dialogues

Beginning October 2008, the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host and facilitate Diversity Dialogues, a program designed to encourage participant discussion through the exchange of viewpoints and ideas about diversity and multiculturalism. Diversity Dialogues will be facilitated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs staff and is open to ALL students at Florida State University.
Courtesy of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the book Understanding Diversity: An Introduction to Class, Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation, authored by Dr. Fred L. Pincus will be issued to participants and used as a reference to frame each Diversity Dialogues session. The seven chapter book contains a list of key terms and their definitions, the analytical concepts most frequently addressed in diversity studies, and Pincus (2006) anticipates that “students will no doubt agree with some things and strongly disagree with others” (p. 8). Dr. Pincus is a professor of sociology at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs recognizes that as each semester progresses, many students encounter time constraint issues as they try to balance academics and co-curricular interests. With this in mind, the Diversity Dialogues will center on one chapter of Understanding Diversity: An Introduction to Class, Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation per month. This structure will help us in our efforts to present an inclusive program, one which will engage students intellectually on current diversity related issues while requiring a minimal time commitment.
